Protein Intake and CKD - CKD Patients Diet

Many patients with CKD know their diet principle that is low-protein diet .Is that absolutely ? The answer is NO ! That depends on the condition of the patients .

1. Chronic nephritis. Clinically, chronic nephritis is divided into ordinary type, hypertensive type, and nephropathy type. Dietary therapy for the first two types should be similar with the case of acute nephritis, the proteins intake need to be restricted to no more than 1 gram per day for 1 kilogram body weight.
There has dispute on diet for CKD patients in recent days. Patients can excrete proteins with urine for more than 3 grams per day, this will inevitably cause malnutrition to them, so people mistakenly believe that large amount of protein supplement can improve patients’ nutritional status. On the contrary, only by lowering the protein intake can reduce the proteinuria and maintain the level of plasma albumin.
Chronic renal dysfunction, uremia. Azotemia and uremia are different clinical stages of chronic renal failure, it is mainly from retention of waste products in blood. Dietary therapy in this two condition is very important, it is supposed to be low in protein, aiming at decreasing the stimulation from toxins, improper diet will make the process of chronic renal dysfunction and uremia faster, Experiment shows that when glomerular filtration rate is in the range of 25 to 75, low protein intake will slow down the process of renal failure, the appropriate supplement should be 0.55 gram per day for 1 kilogram body weight.

Patients with chronic renal dysfunction whose GFR is lower than 25 and not in dialysis, the treatment can be low protein accompanied with amino acid and ketonic acid, the low protein can be referred as 0.28 gram per day for 1 kilogram weight, and the daily protein supplement should be about 16 to 18 grams.
