Causes of kidney Infections in Women?

Do you know the causes of kidney infections? And in other hand do you know the causes of kidney infections in women?Follow me and learn more about the causes.

A kidney infection, also known as pyelonephritis, is a specific type of infection of the urinary tract. Pyelonephritis commonly starts as a urinary tract infection in the bladder or urethra and when left untreated, travels up into the kidneys. Symptoms include fever, back, side or groin pain, abdominal pain, frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, pus or blood in urine and strong urge to urinate. Women are more prone to urinary tract infections possibly due to the shorter urethra, which can make it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

Sex

Sex is a common cause of urinary tract infections in women. A woman's urethra, which leads to the bladder, is only a short distance from the vaginal opening that sits very close to the rectum. The close proximity from the rectum to the vagina can often cause bacteria to enter the vagina during sex, according to FamilyDoctor.org. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that frequent or recent sexual activity is the most common risk factor for a urinary tract infection in women and that women having sex for the first time or who suddenly begin to have sex frequently are commonly at risk for a bladder infection, referred to as honeymoon cystitis. Certain types of sexual positions, such as the woman on top, may increase the chance of a woman developing a UTI as well. Physicians will commonly treat the infection with antibiotics that can prevent it from becoming a more serious kidney infection.

Pregnancy

It is common for women to experience urinary tract infections during pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association explains that women are at an increased risk for UTIs from week six to 24 of their pregnancies. UTIs commonly occur during pregnancy due to the changes to the urinary tract. A woman’s uterus sits directly on top of her bladder. As the uterus grows, the increased pressure can often cause blockages, which prevent urine from leaving the bladder, leading to an increase in infections. If a urinary tract infection goes untreated, it may lead to pyelonephritis. Untreated pyelonephritis can lead to early labor and low birth weight babies. Physicians can safely treat a urinary tract infection with antibiotics during pregnancy.

Menopause

The risk for developing urinary tract infections increases after menopause. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists warn that when a woman goes through menopause, her level of estrogen decreases. This decrease in estrogen causes the walls of the urinary tract to thin, making it harder to resist infection. Estrogen depletion may also reduce certain immune factors that help the vagina block E. Coli from adhering to vaginal cells, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Estrogen creams can help decrease the risks of a urinary tract infection.
